LÍBANO - LEBANON

Lebanon has historically served as a medical bridge between the East and the West. Its modern healthcare system was established during the 19th and early 20th centuries, notably with the founding of the Syrian Protestant College in 1866, which later became the American University of Beirut (AUB). This institution established one of the first standardized medical curricula in the region, positioning Beirut as the premier educational hub for medical professionals throughout the Middle East.
Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918, the period under the French Mandate (1920–1943) spurred the creation of the French Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, consolidating a bilingual and multicultural model of care. Despite the challenges of the Civil War (1975–1990), the country has maintained a tradition of excellence in biomedical research, serving as the birthplace of internationally renowned scientists, such as the 2021 Nobel Prize in Medicine laureate, Ardem Patapoutian.
